today i just drove home from my brothers house, on the news, before i left they reported that the cops were saying slow down. the bad weather and fast driving was causing many accidents. in truth i do not think it was the speed that was the problem. the problems come from drivers letting there egos get in the way when they are driving, altho the bad weather we have had does have an effect.
what happens is people get driving down the road then are passed by a ford, or a Suzuki, or a Chev and they decided there car can go faster. a good example happened to day as i was driving home.
this happened to 2 cars, one white truck and one green SUV, first thing that happened is a green SUV passed me in a nice passing lain up over the top of the mountain. shortly after the white truck started to pass me and the green SUV moved into the right lain. nothing weird about that the white truck even pass the green SUV. then the passing lain was over and for all intensive proposes they were out of my hair (not that i have any.)
the odd thing was that by the next passing lane as we went over the mountain i could still see the white truck and green SUV and guess what i saw the green SUV stated to pass the white truck and as far as i could see they 2 cars were racing each other from there. now all it would take from there is one patch of ice or even slush and on of those 2 cars to loose control and you could have a nasty accident.
another revers example is as i was driving up the canyon just as i was starting there was a car. i believe this car was thinking i was not driving properly because i was fallowing too close (i really was not that close but i was preparing to pass) the first passing lane he took up both passing lanes which i admit made me mad and started making me believe this guy was trying to slow me down for my own good, you know controlling others.
the next passing lane he pulled a staying in the left lane even with signs posted saying 'keep right except to pass'. i think that clinched it, that is when i knew he was playing with me some how, or he was a very bad driver. ether way i was not staying behind him. i also know it is better to pass some one than to stay behind them and start to drive angry. now i admit this was not good form on my side, but i passed him on the right side.
now i am not saying i did not do any thing wrong but after i had passed him the car kept up with me. meaning they were only slowing down because i was behind them and they were preventing me from passing for some reason i am not sure what it was, but i believe this was a ego trip. there are other times when people have ego trips, i know i have had some as well.
the point is that when you, or i have an ego trip we do things we would not normally do. many of these things are unsafe and dangerous in the best conditions but when you pull these tricks in bad weather it can be fatal.
